“Social media is the guy at the party who won’t stop talking; social marketing is the friend who wants to hear what you have to say.” Ahhh, spoken like a true social marketer. Barbara Goose, an executive at Digitas, points to mobile as the death of the salesman. Statistics show that consumers much prefer recommendations from members of their social network, and now that network can be with them all the time.
The big question that I have about this is whether or not members of a social network are going to use the proposed technologies. I imagine the interface for creating a Facebook poll on a smartphone while standing in front of the wall of choices at Best Buy is not exactly effortless. A good ol’ mass text should do the job. Perhaps tablets will eventually emerge as better options. What I am saying is that users are less likely to use this technology on-the-go. It seems more practical for them to pre-meditate their shopping experiences so that Facebook polls and the like can be created on a bigger screen with a faster Internet connection. That being said, the RedLaser App is the bomb. I don’t even have an iPhone (countdown to February 10th for Verizon users), but it may be worth its price in the amount of money I’ll save with RedLaser.
